Summit will give 10 middle school students at Workshop Middle School the opportunity to experience the outdoors and building valuable outdoor and life skills through after school sessions and experiential trips. They’ll learn to persevere through challenges, make careful decisions, solve problems, and work together as a team. 

Ages

Summit at Workshop is for grades 6-8, mixed gender

Program Dates

Session 1: September – December – 12 weeks

After School Sessions:

After school sessions will take place 1 day per week at or near the Workshop School:

• Team building activities
• Outdoor survival skills
• Environmental education
• Community Service

Experiential Trips:

Participants will put their skills to the test by completing 4 experiential trips during the course of the program. The trips will be 2 nights at our near the Trail Blazers residential site in New Jersey. All food and transportation are included.

• Weekend hiking trip  – November 19-21 – sessions leading up to the trip include:
  • Navigation and Trail finding
  • Map making and reading
  • Packing a bag
  • Stamina building
  • Food on the trail
• Overnight Building Trip  – February 11-13 – sessions leading up to the trip include:
  • Building a shelter
  • Knotting
  • Carving
• Overnight Biking Trip March 18-20 – sessions leading up to the trip include:
  • Basic bike repair
  • Mountain bike navigation skills

  • Canoeing skills
  • Water rescue skills

Survival Kit

Each participant is equipped with some survival basics, included in the program

Terms and Conditions

After successfully running in-person programs throughout this pandemic, including day camp in 2020, we learned a thing or two about keeping families safe. All our counselors have been trained on COVID best practices, following CDC and DOH regulations, and strictly adhere to our Safety Plan and guidelines to ensure the safety of our campers, families, and staff. Our safety plan for after school will be developed with guidance from the Department of Education and the Workshop School and will be posted here.
